Indonesian Embassy in Athens Hosts ASEAN Day Celebration

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Indonesian Embassy in Athens hosted the 56th commemoration of ASEAN in the Ambassador’s Residence on Tuesday, August 8, 2023. This year’s ASEAN Day also coincides with Indonesia’s chairmanship of ASEAN and the ASEAN Committee in Athens (ACAT), comprising Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The event was attended by several foreign ambassadors of ASEAN partners and government officials of Greece, such as the Secretary-General of Economy of Greece Foreign Ministry Mme. Maira Myrogianni as the Guest of Honor.

The Indonesian Ambassador for Greece Bebeb A.K. Nugraha Djundjunan highlighted in his opening remarks ASEAN’s role as a peace, safety, and prosperity contributor in the Southeast Asia region in the middle of multidimensional challenges and global geopolitics dynamics.

According to the ambassador, with a total of 679 million citizens and a total GDP of US$3.6 trillion, ASEAN continues developing as a forward-looking, prospective, and progressive economic partner.

Furthermore, on August 3, 2023, Greece’s Foreign Minister signed the Instrument of Accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC). The treaty was intended to bring ASEAN closer to Greece through the development of concrete media and forums to promote ASEAN-Greece people-to-people contacts and trade and economic cooperation.

Meanwhile, Secretary-General Mme. Maira Myrogianni noted that ASEAN members are Greece’s key partners to develop various sectors, specifically trade, investment, maritime, and cultural. 

Greece is committed to boosting bilateral relationships with ASEAN members to a higher level. According to UN Comtrade, the total of ASEAN-Greece bilateral trade in 2022 reached US$1.7 billion and increased by 5.77% compared to 2021.

In addition to the main event, ASEAN Day was a platform to promote the cultural aspects of ASEAN members, especially concerning each country’s national food, such as meatballs, mud cakes, spring rolls, and pad thai. The event also showed a Ratoh Jaroe Dance by Friends of Indonesia in Greece. The dance reflected harmony, coordination, and collaboration between ASEAN members.
